上堂舉。龐居士云。十方同聚會。箇箇學無為。此是選佛場。心空及第歸。師云。既是無為。作麼生學。若也心空。又作麼生及第。還相委悉麼。其或未然。天童又為分疎去也。飲乾巨海。推倒須彌。廓大靈通更是誰。馨香秀林栴檀枝。哮吼出屈師子兒。三千界現一彈指。八萬門開雙用眉。知不知為不為。道滿十處兮心超億劫。影流萬象兮氣分二儀。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Layman Pang said, 'From the ten directions gathering together, each one learns non-action. This is the arena for choosing Buddhas; with an empty mind, one passes the exam and returns.'" The Master said: "Since it is non-action, how do you learn it? If the mind is empty, how does one pass the exam? Do you understand? If not yet so, Tiantong will explain it further for you: / Drink dry the giant sea, topple Mount Sumeru; / Vast, spirit-like comprehension—who else could it be? / Fragrant and lovely in the forest, the sandalwood branch; / Roaring as it emerges from the cave, the lion's cub. / The three thousand worlds appear in the snap of a finger; / Eighty thousand gates open with a pair of working eyebrows. / Knowing or not knowing, acting or not acting— / The Way fills the ten places, the mind transcends countless kalpas; / Shadows flow through the myriad phenomena, energy divides into the two modes."
