上堂生不為有。動與寂隨。滅不為無。處與智共。所以道。如鏡照像。像非外緣。如珠發光。光還自照。因緣有所不到。生死有所不及。正恁麼時。如何體悉。夜半烏兒頭戴雪。天明啞子抱頭歸。

Ascending the hall: "Arising is not considered being; movement accompanies stillness. Extinction is not considered non-being; place shares with wisdom. Therefore it is said: like a mirror reflecting an image, the image is not an external condition; like a pearl emitting light, the light still reflects itself. Causes and conditions cannot reach it; birth and death cannot affect it. Just at such a time, how do you comprehend it? / At midnight, the crow wears snow upon its head; / At dawn, the mute person clutches his head and returns."
