Ascending the hall, he cited: A monk asked Nanquan, "What about when one bows deeply to Śākya and does not prostrate to Maitreya?" Nanquan said, "Yesterday someone asked like this, and I drove him out." The monk said, "The Venerable fears that I am not sincere." Nanquan said, "My staff is not here, but with a broom handle I'll give you thirty strokes for now." Later, Xuedou said, "Nanquan only had the mind to receive the jade, and lacked the intention to cede the cities." The Master said: Upon examination, Xuedou also deserves thirty blows with the staff. Why? Have you not heard it said: "When one should be decisive but is not, it instead invites chaos"? Do you all understand? Tiantong cannot help but point it out for you: Old Teacher Wang has plenty of mettle; / Right and wrong sweep away all emotional notions. / Leaning against heaven, reflecting off the snow, brilliant and radiant, / Sweeping away the ominous comets across ten thousand miles.
