上堂舉。漸源一日坐紙帳內。僧至撥開帳子云。不審。源以目見之。良久云會麼。僧云不會。源云。七佛已前事。為甚麼不會。師云。湛湛不昏。綿綿若存。三世佛護持為之頂相。歷代祖傳受為之命根。且作麼生體悉。還會麼。蒼頭祖父寒居位。白髮兒孫夜過門。

Ascending the hall, he cited: One day Jianyuan was sitting inside a paper curtain. A monk arrived, pulled open the curtain, and said, "Greetings." Jianyuan looked at him. After a long pause, he said, "Do you understand?" The monk said, "I do not understand." Jianyuan said, "Why do you not understand the matter prior to the seven Buddhas?" The Master said: Deep and unconfused, continuous as if existing. The Buddhas of the three periods protect it as their uṣṇīṣa; the successive patriarchs transmit it as their life-root. And how do you comprehend it? Do you understand? The grey-haired grandfather coldly occupies the seat; / The white-haired child passes the gate by night.
