上堂舉僧問玄沙。如何是無縫塔。沙云。只者一縫大小。師云。只者一縫大小。飽叢林漢分曉。點頭言語丁寧。擺手舌頭狤獠。不狤獠。人人脚下長安道。

Ascending the hall, he cited: A monk asked Xuansha, "What is the seamless stūpa?" Xuansha said, "Just this size of a seam." The Master said: "Just this size of a seam"—a fellow well-fed on the monastic groves understands clearly. Nodding the head, the words are earnest; waving the hand, the tongue is barbarian. Not barbarian: under everyone's feet lies the Chang'an road.
