上堂舉雲居問僧。看底是甚麼經。僧云。維摩經。居云。不問維摩經。看底是甚麼經。師云。不問維摩經。看底甚麼經。大千卷出破塵情。水中鹽味色裏膠青。機前有路妙難名。纔形言像迢然去。又是泥團換眼睛。

Ascending the hall, he cited: Yunju asked a monk, "What sūtra are you reading?" The monk said, "The Vimalakīrti Sūtra." Yunju said, "I am not asking about the Vimalakīrti Sūtra; what sūtra are you reading?" The Master said: Not asking about the Vimalakīrti Sūtra, what sūtra are you reading? The scroll of the great trichiliocosm emerges, shattering worldly sentiments; like the taste of salt in water, like the glue's blue in color. Before the mechanism there is a road, marvelously hard to name; as soon as words and images take form, it is already far away—again exchanging eyes with a lump of mud.
