4.221

上堂。佛佛說法。秖成黃葉止啼。祖祖傳宗。還是空拳相嚇。到者裏直須自休歇。自悟自明。佛是已躬做成。法非別人付得。若能恁麼。是大丈夫漢。真衲僧。自己一段大事。諸兄弟且作麼生得平平穩穩去。但得雪消去。自然春到來。

Ascending the hall: Buddha after Buddha expounding the Dharma amounts merely to yellow leaves stopping a child's crying; patriarch after patriarch transmitting the lineage is still just an empty fist intimidating someone. Reaching here, you must simply rest and cease on your own, become enlightened on your own, and clarify it on your own. Buddhahood is accomplished by one's own person; the Dharma is not something conferred by another. If you can be like this, you are a great hero, a true patch-robed monk. As for your own one great affair, brothers, how can you attain a completely stable footing? Just let the snow melt away, and spring naturally arrives.
