上堂舉。趙州問僧。曾到此間麼。僧云曾到。州云。喫茶去。又問僧。僧云。不曾到。州云。喫茶去。院主問云。曾到喫茶去。不曾到為甚麼亦喫茶去。州喚院主。主應諾。州云。喫茶去。後鏡清問僧。趙州喫茶去作麼生。僧便行。清云。邯鄲學唐步。雪竇拈云。者僧不是邯鄲人。為甚麼學唐步。師云。喫茶去喫茶去。明明指人無異語。家風平展沒機關。誰道。趙州謾院主。苦苦苦。往往邯鄲學唐步。恰恰長安道上行。分明有眼如天瞽。鏡清道邯鄲學唐步。雪竇道者僧不是邯鄲人。為甚學唐步。還會麼。登機者失。欺敵者亡。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] brought up: Zhaozhou asked a monk, "Have you been here before?" The monk said, "I have been here." Zhaozhou said, "Go drink tea." He asked another monk, and the monk said, "I have not been here." Zhaozhou said, "Go drink tea." The monastery director asked, "Why did you say 'Go drink tea' to the one who had been here, and also say 'Go drink tea' to the one who had not been here?" Zhaozhou called out, "Monastery Director!" The director responded. Zhaozhou said, "Go drink tea." Later, Jingqing asked a monk, "What was Zhaozhou's 'Go drink tea' about?" The monk immediately walked away. Jingqing said, "Learning the Handan walk in the Tang." Xuedou took this up and said, "This monk was not a person of Handan; why was he learning the Tang walk?" The Master said: "'Go drink tea! Go drink tea!' Clearly pointing it out to others without any disparate words; the family tradition is laid out flat without contrivance. Who says Zhaozhou deceived the monastery director? Bitter, bitter, bitter! Often learning the Handan walk in the Tang, just as one is walking on the road to Chang'an. Clearly having eyes, yet like one born blind! Jingqing said, 'Learning the Handan walk in the Tang.' Xuedou said, 'This monk was not a person of Handan; why was he learning the Tang walk?' Do you understand? Those who mount the crucial point lose it; those who deceive the opponent perish."
