Instructing the assembly, he brought up: Jingqing asked Caoshan: "How is it when the principle of pure emptiness ultimately has no body?"
Caoshan said: "Principle is just like this; what about phenomena?"
The Master said: "Where wisdom does not reach, winding through extremity and penetration."
Jingqing said: "Accord with principle and accord with phenomena."
The Master said: "The subtle within the coarse; the coarse within the subtle."
Caoshan said: "Deceiving Caoshan alone is fine, but what can you do about the eyes of all the sages?"
The Master said: "The true does not conceal the false; the crooked does not hide the straight."
Jingqing said: "If not for the eyes of all the sages, how could one know it is not so?"
The Master said: "Knowing error, one corrects it; knowing wrong, one turns back."
Caoshan said: "Officially, not even a needle can pass; privately, carts and horses can go through."
The Master said: "Riding an ox, wearing a hat, putting on shoes and robe; understanding how to walk without touching the road of the present time."
