4.266

示眾舉。定上座問臨濟。如何是佛法大意。濟下禪床擒住。與一掌便托開。定佇立。傍僧云。定上座何不禮拜。定方禮拜忽然大悟。師云。不墮前後。獨超古今。喚回千歲夢。飛出九臯禽。無捿泊勿猜斟。只箇虛空等樣心。直下一槌光迸散。斬新彈子出爐金。

Instructing the assembly, he cited: Senior Monk Ding asked Linji, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?" Linji got down from the meditation bench, seized him, gave him a slap, and shoved him away. Ding stood still. A monk beside him said, "Senior Ding, why do you not bow?" Just as Ding bowed, he had a sudden great awakening. The Master said: "Not falling into before and after, uniquely transcending past and present. Calling back a thousand-year dream; flying out, a bird of the nine-layered marsh. With no roosting or lodging, do not guess or deliberate: just this mind equal in likeness to empty space. Directly beneath a single hammer blow, the light scatters and bursts forth—brand-new pellets of gold coming out of the furnace."
