4.270

示眾舉僧問趙州。學人乍入叢林乞師指示。州云。喫粥了未。僧云。喫粥了。州云。洗鉢盂去。僧豁然大悟。師云。喫粥了洗鉢去。法爾圓成正規矩。可憐葉氏怕真龍。却怪謝郎欺猛虎。本常路真實語。這僧且問。如何悟。從來鼻孔大頭垂。不用安排兮自著處所。

Instructing the assembly, he cited: A monk asked Zhaozhou, "This student has newly entered the monastic grove; I beg the Master for instruction." Zhou said, "Have you eaten your gruel yet?" The monk said, "I have eaten the gruel." Zhou said, "Go wash your bowl." The monk was suddenly greatly awakened. The Master said: "'Having eaten the gruel, go wash the bowl'—naturally perfected, the proper regulation. How pitiable that Lord Ye feared the real dragon, yet one wonders why Xie Lang dared to deceive the fierce tiger. The ordinary path of the origin, words of true reality. Let this monk be asked: how did he awaken? All along, nostrils hang downwards on a big head; without need of contrivance, they naturally have their place."
