示眾舉。偽山問仰山甚處來。仰山云。田中來。山云。田中多少人。仰插下鍬子。叉手而立。山云。南山大有人刈茆。仰拈起鍬子便行。師云。仰山恁麼為直下更無別箇。溈山恁麼道箇中似帶旁來。且道。畢竟作麼生。殷勤謝子輸肝膽。委曲還他老肺膓。

Instructing the assembly, he cited: Guishan asked Yangshan, "Where have you come from?" Yangshan said, "From the fields." Shan said, "How many people are in the fields?" Yang thrust his spade into the ground and stood with hands crossed over his chest. Shan said, "On the South Mountain there are plenty of people cutting thatch." Yang picked up the spade and left. The Master said: "Yangshan acting like this: directly beneath it there is nothing else. Guishan speaking like this: within it, there seems to be a slant brought along. Tell me, what is it ultimately? Earnestly thank the son for pouring out his heart and guts; in all its intricacies, leave it to the old man's heart and lungs."
