Ascending the hall on the lifting of the summer retreat, a monk asked, "How is it when the cloth bag's mouth is opened?" The Master said, "Leave it free to fill ditches and choke valleys." The monk said, "A crescent moon rises over the sea; how many families go up to their towers?" The Master said, "You must take another step before you can attain it." The monk said, "Going straight to the Western Heavens in the morning and returning to the Land of Tang at dusk—this too is a fellow whose heels do not touch the ground." The Master said, "Senior, how do you avoid this fault?" The monk bowed. The Master said, "Gazing from a thousand miles at the homeland pass." The Master then said: "Before the fifteenth day, strictly holding fast, pressing your forehead so it touches the ground. After the fifteenth day, slightly letting go, letting his nostrils reach all the way to heaven. Even if you stroke the staff and see through the ancestors of all directions, how could that compare to transmitting the bowl-bag, the five-petaled flower linked together? Speaking like this belongs precisely to the affairs before the fifteenth day and after the fifteenth day. But tell me, what about the very fifteenth day?" After a good while, he said: "The rustic scenery is no longer blocked by mountains; the light of the sky connects directly with the water."
