Ascending the hall upon returning from carrying the bowl: "Begging for food in western Zhejiang, in Su and Xiu; everyone venerates the Buddha, and every family is wealthy. Having gathered nearly thirty thousand strings of cash, still it cannot feed the mouths of the assembly. Therefore it is said: eating rice requires the mouths of the assembly; doing work requires the strength of the assembly. This is news handed down from past to present. Tiantong offers a formula for abstaining from grain: twice a day, the alms bowl gets wet. Great Master Yunmen said, 'How could rice not be oneself? Why use oneself to go and eat oneself?' Some say, 'A single hair swallows the vast ocean; a mustard seed contains Mount Sumeru.' Recklessly tossing it about has no connection. How can you speak so that it hits the mark? Stripping away sense bases and dust, only then do you emerge without obstruction; not a single grain remains that does not interconnect."
