中秋上堂舉。馬大師與南泉百丈西堂翫月次。祖云。正恁麼時如何。西堂云。正好供養。百丈云。正好修行。南泉拂袖便行。祖云。經歸藏禪歸海。唯有普願。獨超物外。師云。經歸藏禪歸海。稽首歸依。合掌頂戴。王老師超物外。二十年前恁麼來。而今去盡閒光彩。

Ascending the hall for Mid-Autumn, he cited: "Master Ma was admiring the moon together with Nanquan, Baizhang, and Xitang. The Patriarch said, 'Right at such a time, what is it like?' Xitang said, 'Just right for making offerings.' Baizhang said, 'Just right for cultivating practice.' Nanquan shook his sleeves and walked away. The Patriarch said, 'The sūtras return to the canon (Zang); Chan returns to the ocean (Hai). Only Puyuan alone transcends outside of things.'" The Master said, "'The sūtras return to the canon; Chan returns to the ocean.' Bowing the head in refuge, pressing palms together and upholding it on the crown. 'Old Teacher Wang transcends outside of things'—twenty years ago it came like this, but now all idle luster has been discarded."
