Ascending the hall: "A single horse surges forth, a single spear thrusts straight in. In the flash of sudden lightning, see the turning around; when swift thunder suddenly collapses the desk-mountain, a dull fellow has no time to cover his ears. I recall Linji saying: 'When I was at my late master's place, I received three beatings with the stick, like a whisk of mugwort branches. Now I wish to receive one beating—who will take a hand to me?' At that time a monk came forward and said, 'I will take a hand.' Linji passed the staff to the monk; as the monk intended to take it, Linji struck him. The Master said: 'Linji deliberately sought a person, yet would not casually compromise his integrity. This monk carelessly opened his mouth, and readily bumped his head. At that time, as soon as he heard him speak like that, why didn't he give him the patch-robed monk's method? Seeing it and not taking it, for a thousand years it is hard to forget.'"
