示眾舉僧問趙州。學人乍入叢林乞師指示。州云。喫粥了未。僧云。喫粥了。州云。洗鉢盂去。師云。聞說英雄苦戰爭。四方岐路自難行。而今踏著長安道。始信家邦久太平。

Instructing the assembly, he cited: "A monk asked Zhaozhou, 'I have newly entered the monastic grove; I beg the master to give instructions.' Zhou said, 'Have you eaten your gruel yet?' The monk said, 'I have eaten the gruel.' Zhou said, 'Go wash your bowl.'" The Master said, "Hearing of heroes in bitter warfare, the crossroads in the four directions are naturally hard to travel. But now treading upon the road to Chang'an, one begins to believe the homeland has long been at peace."
