4.310

送化主上堂。一物長靈。十方普應。騎聲跨色。超眺越聽。浩浩也能縱能橫。如如也能動能靜。參飽叢林箇樣人。取飯不問誰家甑。佛云。常乞是清規。一切食中斯正命。若也仰口食下口食。皆謂之邪命。只如以正命食供飽參人時如何。滿瓶傾不出。大地勿飢人。

Sending off the fund-raising monk, [the Master] ascended the hall: "One thing is eternally numinous, universally responding in the ten directions: riding upon sounds and striding across forms, leaping beyond seeing and surpassing hearing. Vast and boundless, it can be unconstrained horizontally and vertically; such-like, it can be in motion and in stillness. A person of this sort who has practiced to the full in the monastic groves accepts rice without asking whose steamer it comes from. The Buddha said: 'Constant begging is the pure rule; among all foods, this is right livelihood.' If one eats with mouth turned upward or eats with mouth turned downward, these are all called wrong livelihood. Just what is it like when one offers food of right livelihood to sate a person of full practice? The full vase does not pour out; on the great earth there are no starving people."
