Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "A monk asked Venerable Nanyue Rang, 'Like casting an image from a mirror, after the image is formed, where does the mirror's brightness go?' Rang said, 'Like when the Venerable was a youth, where did that appearance go?' The monk said, 'Just after the image is formed, why does it not illuminate?' Rang said, 'Although it does not illuminate, it cannot be deceived in the slightest.'" The Master said: "Before the spiritual mechanism stirs, one enters the ring of the Way first. Penetrating the ultimate principle, one marvelously attains exhaustive comprehension; according with phenomena, one provisionally distinguishes borrowing. Formless and impartial, what is fixed or necessary? Graceful, the soul of the moon imprinted in the water; flowing, the spring rhythm within the flowers. Towering and grand, bright and radiant! Moving everywhere and standing alone throughout the three thousand great thousands [of worlds]."
