Ascending the hall: "Within the ring, illumination accords; news subsides in stillness. Outside boundaries, it alone persists; the profound spirit transcends duality. Intimate and without leak, vast and without corners. Pure and empty throughout, its principle transcends name and speech; round and complete in all ten parts, its Way has no edges or corners. Venerable Chan practitioners, this is the abode of all Buddhas' nirvāṇa, the burial ground of sentient beings. All dharmas arise from this; all illusory conditions are extinguished from this. And tell me, at just such a time, how do you tread it?" After a long pause, he said: "Under a frosty sky, the moon sets as night nears its half; who shares the cold reflection in the clear pool?"
