The ancients had morning instructions and evening requests. At the end of the summer, Cuiyan nevertheless addressed the assembly like this. Yet it is nonetheless solitary and steep, nonetheless earth-shaking. Tell me: does the whole great canon of teachings—five thousand forty-eight fascicles—inevitably speaking of mind and nature, speaking of sudden and gradual, have this news or not? In just such a season, Cuiyan was extraordinary among them. Look at him speaking in this way, and tell me: where did his intent fall? When the ancients lowered a single hook, it was never cast in vain; there had to be a reason to help people. Many people mistakenly understand it, saying: 'Under the bright sun and blue sky he spoke words with nowhere to turn; without an issue he created an issue. At the end of the summer he first spoke of his own faults and examined himself first to avoid others examining him.' Fortunately, this has no connection. This kind of view is called extinguishing the Hu race. When the successive generations of lineage masters appeared in the world, if they did not offer pointers to people, it would be entirely without benefit—what would they be aiming for? When you see through to this point, only then will you know that the ancients had the method of driving away the plowman's ox and snatching away the starving man's food. Nowadays, when people are questioned, they immediately chew upon the words and phrases and make a living on the eyebrows. Look at that person of the household: naturally he knows where he treads. Thousand transformations and ten thousand changes, knobby twists and thorny turns—at every step there is a path of escape, so he can thus harmonize with him. If these words were not extraordinary, why would the three—Yunmen, Baofu, and Changqing—so eagerly harmonize with him? Baofu said: 'One who acts as a thief has an uneasy heart.' Just because of these words, they stirred up all those emotional interpretations spoken of just now. Tell me, what was Baofu's meaning? You must strictly avoid seeking that ancient under the phrases! If you produce feelings and give rise to thoughts, your eyes will be swapped out. Little do you know that Baofu's delivery of a turning phrase cut off Cuiyan's heels. Changqing said: 'They have grown.' Many people say: 'Changqing turned along with Cuiyan's heels, and that is why he said they have grown.' Fortunately, this has no connection! They do not realize that Changqing brought forth his own understanding when he said they have grown. Each has his own place of escape. Let me ask you: what place is the place of growth? It is just like the diamond king's jeweled sword before an adept, used directly on the spot. If you can smash the views of the common run and cut off gain and loss, right and wrong, only then will you see where Changqing harmonized with him. Yunmen said: 'Barrier!' It is indeed extraordinary, but it is just difficult to investigate. Master Yunmen mostly showed people with one-word Chan. Although in a single word, it must contain three phrases. Look at the ancients: facing dynamic moments and harmonizing, they were naturally vastly different from people of today. This is a model for uttering phrases. Although he spoke like this, his intent was definitely not there. Since it is not there, tell me: where is it? You must also investigate it thoroughly yourself before you get it. If you are a person of clear eye, you possess the moves that illuminate heaven and earth, immediately eight-sided and translucent. For that single word 'barrier' of his, Xuedou strung all three of them together and chanted them in a verse eulogy:
