If Xuedou had not chanted it in verse with such compassion to let people see, how could he be called a kalyāṇamitra? For the ancients to act like this, in every case they had no other choice. Because later students cling to their words and phrases, giving rise in turn to emotional interpretations, they therefore do not see the ancient's intended meaning. Nowadays, if someone were suddenly to come forth, overturn the Chan seat, and shout to disperse the great assembly, you could not blame him. Even though it is like this, you must genuinely reach this ground before you can. Xuedou said: 'Matchless through a thousand ages.' He merely said: 'Look, are Cuiyan's eyebrows still there?' What was so extraordinary about it that it is matchless through a thousand ages? You must know that when an ancient spat out a word or half a phrase, it was not done rashly; he had to possess the eye that stabilizes heaven and earth before it would do. When Xuedou penned a word or half a phrase, it was like the diamond king's jeweled sword, like a crouching lion, like spark struck from flint, like a flash of lightning. If one did not possess an eye in the crown of one's head, how could one see where that ancient landed? This instruction to the assembly is truly matchless through a thousand ages, surpassing Deshan's staff and Linji's shout. Tell me: where does Xuedou's intent in helping people lie? And how do you understand his saying, 'Matchless through a thousand ages; responded to with the word "barrier"; losing money and incurring guilt'? What is the meaning of this? Even if you possess the eye that penetrates the barrier, when you reach here, you must also be thorough before it will do. Tell me: is it Cuiyan who loses money and incurs guilt, is it Xuedou who loses money and incurs guilt, or is it Yunmen who loses money and incurs guilt? If you can penetrate this, I grant that you possess the eye. 'Disheveled Baofu, repressing and exalting, he is hard to come by'—repressing himself and exalting the ancient. Tell me: where is Baofu repressing, and where is he exalting? 'Chattering Cuiyan, clearly he is a thief'—tell me, what did he steal? Yet Xuedou said he is a thief. Strictly avoid turning along with the pulse of his words! When you reach here, you must have your own command before you can. 'The white jade has no flaw'—eulogizing Cuiyan as very much like flawless white jade, without the slightest blemish. 'Who can tell the real from the fake?'—it can be said that rarely is there anyone who can distinguish it. Xuedou had great talent, so from beginning to end he strung them all together on a single cord. Only at the very end did he say: 'Changqing intimately understood: "The eyebrows have grown!"' Tell me: where is the 'grown'? Quickly fix your eye and look!
