Do you people understand where this monk asked and where Yunmen answered? If you understand, both mouths share no tongue; if you do not, you will inevitably remain muddled. A monk asked Xuansha, “What is the pure Dharmakāya?” Xuansha said, “Dripping with pus.” If you have the vajra-eye, try to discern it. Yunmen was unlike other people: sometimes he held fast, standing like a wall of ten thousand cubits, leaving you no place to approach; sometimes he opened a sliver of a path for you, dying together and living together. Yunmen’s tongue was exceedingly subtle. Some say he answered at random; if you understand it like that, tell me: where does Yunmen land? This is a family matter within the house; do not calculate it outwardly. Therefore Baizhang said, “All myriad phenomena and all words and expressions are turned back toward oneself, made to spin smoothly, and spoken directly toward the lively ground.” If you deliberate and ponder, you will immediately fall into the second phrase. Yongjia said, “When the Dharmakāya is awakened to, there is not a single thing; the fundamental source of one’s own nature is the naturally real Buddha.” Yunmen tested this monk, and this monk was also a man within his house; having practiced long, he knew the matters inside his house. He went on to say, “What about when going along just like this?” Yunmen said, “A golden-haired lion.” Tell me: does he approve of him, or not approve of him? Does he praise him, or disparage him? Yantou said, “When speaking of battle, each stands at the pivot.” He also said that one investigates the living phrase, not the dead phrase: if you comprehend under the living phrase, you will not forget it for eternal kalpas; if you comprehend under the dead phrase, you cannot even save yourself. Another monk asked Yunmen, “Is the Buddha-Dharma like the moon in the water or not?” Yunmen said, “The clear waves have no penetrating path.” The monk went on, “From where did the Venerable obtain it?” Yunmen said, “Asking again, whence do you come?” The monk said, “What about right when going along like this?” Yunmen said, “Layer upon layer of mountain passes.” You must know that this matter does not abide in words and phrases; it is like sparks struck from flint, like a flash of lightning. Whether you grasp it or fail to grasp it, you will inevitably lose your life. Xuedou was an insider, so he directly chanted it in verse:
