The Master said: 'Limping and stumbling' is the appearance of being emaciated, weak, and not sharp-witted. While Yaoshan was reading a sūtra, Boyan said, 'Venerable Sir, you should stop fooling people.' Yaoshan rolled up the sūtra and said, 'What time of day is it?' [Boyan] said, 'It is right at noon.' Yaoshan said, 'There is still this cultural pattern remaining.' [Boyan] said, 'I do not even have "nothing".' Yaoshan said, 'You are extraordinarily clever.' [Boyan] said, 'I am just like this; what is your honourable opinion, Venerable Sir?' Yaoshan said, 'I am limping and stumbling, with a hundred uglinesses and a thousand clumsinesses; I just pass the time like this.' Venerable Xian of Guanxi in his verse said, 'Shaking out the torn cassock worn for many years, / Ragged and frayed, half of it flies with the clouds. / Picking it up and draping it over my shoulders, / It is still better than contemporaries wearing brocade robes.' 'One hundred times unacceptable, / Completely and utterly useless'—among the assembly he is like 'a hundred clumsinesses', being a person of leisure all his life. 'Silently he knows his ground is secure; / Carefree and roaming, who would say his belly is simple-minded?' Wang Fanzhi wore his socks inside out; people all said it was a mistake: 'I would rather pierce your eyes / Than conceal my heels.' Wang Fanzhi was an extraordinary man; these words spread widely in the world. He can be called a leather lantern ball—bright inside, dark outside. The final line versifies: 'having fully inquired to the terrain of rotten antiques, rice grains cover even his eyebrows and eyelashes; one day bursting his scabby belly, the five viscera and internal organs are all vomited out.'
