The Master said: At the age of seven, Yangshan entered samādhi. He saw himself together with the Lord of the Teaching, Kāśyapa, the twenty-seven patriarchs, and others, gathered in a vihāra. The hall hung in empty space without pillars or foundation stones, and the ground had the colour of lapis lazuli. Upon waking, he found himself, like the patriarchs, endowed with pure Brahmanical marks, clad in a golden brocade robe, and seated barefoot in the eighth position. A venerable elder of very great age called out, saying, “Gautama! Today you are to conduct the Dharma service.” Yangshan then descended from his seat, approached the sounding block, and announced, “Great assembly! The pure-minded Mahāyāna Dharma departs from the four propositions and cuts off the hundred negations.” Having finished speaking, he returned to his seat, whereupon the assembly of monks all discussed and analyzed the meaning of this explanation. Yangshan also said of himself that in a dream he went to Maitreya's abode and was placed in the third seat. The Tongyao also says the third seat, which agrees with his original record. A venerable elder struck the gavel and said, “Today it falls to the third seat to preach the Dharma.” Yangshan then arose, struck the gavel, and said, “The Mahāyāna Dharma departs from the four propositions and cuts off the hundred negations. Listen attentively! Listen attentively!” In Sanskrit it is Mahāyāna, which is translated here as Great Vehicle. As for the four propositions and hundred negations, the gong'an of Mazu with “the head of the sūtra-closet is white, the head of Baizhang is black” has already dissected and analyzed them clearly, so it will not be repeated here. Dahui Xiu said: “Following the text to explain the meaning is not without merit; but if suddenly, amid Maitreya’s assembly, an adept had appeared who, the moment he heard him say ‘The Mahāyāna Dharma’, said, ‘Shut those two lips!’, this would not only put an end to Yangshan's talking in his sleep, but would also spare later generations from telling dreams within a dream.” Wansong says: If Dahui knew how to turn his light around and shine it back, even Wansong would have no ground on which to set foot. Is there anyone here who is completely clear within a dream, fully sober within drunkenness? The verse says:
