Answer: Although it is not burned, it still obtains the svalakṣaṇa, and is called direct perception. Why is this? Because mind is subtle and physical matter is coarse. Mind is subtle and formless, whereas physical matter is coarse and has shape. Therefore, when conditioning that fire, although it obtains the svalakṣaṇa, it is nonetheless not burned, and is also called direct perception. Furthermore, that coarse physical matter in truth also cannot destroy subtle physical matter, not to mention mental phenomena. For example, when the disaster of fire occurs, the fire disaster of the desire realm only burns the desire realm, but cannot burn the exceedingly wondrous, subtle physical matter of the samādhi stages of the form realm; therefore, that form realm itself gives rise to a fire disaster that burns its own stage.
