A master of old explained: 'Mind encompasses the myriad dharmas means not only that contemplating the Buddha in a single thought proceeds from one's own mind, but that the bodhisattva's myriad practices and the substance and function of the fruit of buddhahood also do not depart from mind, which also eliminates the fault of deluded grasping. This refers to the calculation that says: "The myriad dharmas are all mind, and leaving it to itself is Buddha; rushing about in the myriad practices, is that not empty toil?" Now it clarifies: "Although mind is itself Buddha, it has long been obscured by defilements and toil; therefore, one enhances cultivation through the myriad practices to make it sparkling and translucent. It only says the myriad practices proceed from mind; it does not say that non-cultivation is correct. Furthermore, the myriad dharmas are themselves mind; how could cultivating obstruct the mind?"'
