Answer: "Mindlessness serenely manifesting—this is the revealing cause; adornment of merit and virtue must arise from conditions. When both causes are fully equipped, only then is the Buddha-body accomplished. None of the Mahāyāna sūtras fails to record this completely. The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa Sūtra says: 'The Buddha-body is indeed the dharmakāya; it is born from immeasurable merit and wisdom; it is born from loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity; it is born from the pāramitās of giving, keeping the precepts, forbearance and gentleness, zealous vigor, dhyāna meditation, liberation, samādhi, much learning, and wisdom; up to being born from severing all unwholesome dharmas and accumulating all wholesome dharmas is the Tathāgata's body born.' It also says: 'Because he is equipped with merit, he does not abide in the unconditioned; because he is equipped with wisdom, he does not exhaust the conditioned; because of great loving-kindness and compassion, he does not abide in the unconditioned; because of fulfilling his original vows, he does not exhaust the conditioned.' This [objection of yours] is turning one's back on the complete teaching and failing to obey the Buddha's words. You intend to take hold of the bondage of nirvāṇa and wish to sink into the pit of liberation; planting a lotus flower upon a high plateau, sowing sweet seeds in empty space—wishing thus to seek the flowers and fruits of bodhi, how could they ever be accomplished? Therefore it says: 'Those who enter the correct station of the unconditioned do not generate the Buddha-dharma. […] Up to: just as without entering the great ocean, one cannot obtain the priceless jewel; so too, without entering the great ocean of afflictions, one cannot obtain the jewel of all-knowledge.'"
