晦堂曰。先師進止嚴重。見者敬畏。衲子因事請假。多峻拒弗從。惟聞省侍親老。氣色穆然見於顏面。盡禮津遣。其愛人恭孝如此（與謝景溫書）。

Huitang said, ‘My late master's deportment was grave and dignified; those who saw him revered and feared him. When patch-robed monks asked for leave on account of personal affairs, he mostly rejected them sternly and would not comply. Only when he heard of visiting and tending to aged parents would a solemn, harmonious expression appear on his face, and he would send them off with complete propriety. His love for people and his reverence for filial piety were like this.’ (Letter to Xie Jingwen)
