1.64

潘延之聞黃龍法道嚴密。因問其要。黃龍曰。父嚴則子敬。今日之規訓。後日之模範也。譬治諸地。隆者下之。窪者平之。彼將登于千仞之山。吾亦與之俱。困而極於九淵之下。吾亦與之俱。伎之窮妄之盡。彼則自休也。又曰。姰之嫗之。春夏所以生育也。霜之雪之。秋冬所以成熟也。吾欲無言可乎（林間錄）。

Pan Yanzhi heard that Huanglong's approach to the Dharma was strict and rigorous, and thereupon asked him about its essential principle. Huanglong said: "When the father is strict, the child is respectful. Today's rules and admonitions are tomorrow's models and standards. It is like leveling the ground: lower the high parts and fill in the low parts. If he climbs a mountain of a thousand fathoms, I will also go with him; if he is trapped and reaches the depths of the nine abysses, I will also go with him. When his tricks are exhausted and his delusions are depleted, he will rest on his own." He also said: "Warming them and brooding them is how spring and summer produce and nurture; frosting them and snowing on them is how autumn and winter mature and ripen. Might I wish to be wordless?"
