Zhenjing cited the case of Practitioner Guang presiding at Wufeng. Public opinion held that Guang was uncouth, clumsy, and lacked worldly talent. When Guang became the abbot, he was strict in governing himself and broad-minded in approaching the assembly; before long, all hundred neglected affairs were set in order. Monks traveling back and forth vied to spread the word noisily. Zhenjing heard of this and said: "How easily students bestow blame and praise! I frequently see the monastic groves whispering: 'That elder practices the Way and brings peace to the assembly; that elder does not encroach upon or consume the permanent property of the saṃgha, and shares sweet and bitter with the assembly.' Now, one called a kalyāṇamitra is the master of an entire monastery; practicing the Way, bringing peace to the assembly, not encroaching upon the permanent property of the saṃgha, and sharing sweet and bitter with the assembly are matters that certainly ought to be done—how are they even worth talking about? It is like a literatus serving as an official for the state and pacifying the people, who then says: 'I do not accept bribes and do not disturb the people.' Now, not accepting bribes and not disturbing the people—could that be something beyond one's duty?" (Shantang xiaocan)
