3.17

雪堂曰。死心住雲巖。室中好怒罵。衲子皆望崖而退。方侍者曰。夫為善知識。行佛祖之道號令人天。當視學者如赤子。今不能施慘怛之憂垂撫循之恩用中和之教。奈何如仇讐見則詬罵。豈善知識用心乎。死心拽拄杖趁之曰。爾見解如此他日諂奉勢位苟媚權豪。賤賣佛法欺网聾俗定矣。予不忍。故以重言激之。安有他哉。欲其知恥改過懷慕不忘異日做好人耳（聰首座記聞）。

Xuetang said: "When Sixin resided at Yunyan, he was fond of scolding in his chamber. The monks all looked up at the precipice and shrank back. Attendant Fang said: 'Now, being a kalyāṇamitra who practices the way of the buddhas and patriarchs and gives commands to humans and devas, one ought to look upon students as infants. Now you are unable to bestow heartfelt concern, extend nurturing kindness, or employ moderate teaching. Why treat them as enemies, scolding them whenever you see them? How could this be the mindset of a kalyāṇamitra?' Sixin grabbed his staff and drove him away, saying: 'With your understanding like this, in the future you will certainly flatter those of status, fawn upon the powerful, cheapen the Buddha Dharma, and deceive the ignorant rabble! I could not bear that; hence I spurred them on with harsh words—how could there be any other motive? I wish only for them to know shame, amend their faults, cherish aspiration without forgetting, and become good people in days to come!'" (Head Monk Cong's Recorded Hearings)
