3.18

死心新和尚曰。秀圓通嘗言。自不能正而欲正他人者。謂之失德。自不能恭而欲恭他人者。謂之悖禮。夫為善知識失德悖禮。將何以垂範後乎（與靈源書）。

Sixin Xin Hechang said: "Xiu Yuantong once said, 'To be unable to rectify oneself and yet wish to rectify others is called a loss of virtue. To be unable to be reverent oneself and yet wish to show reverence to others is called a transgression against propriety.' Now, for a kalyāṇamitra to lose virtue and transgress against propriety—how can he leave a model for posterity?" (Letter to Lingyuan)
