3.32

草堂曰。住持無他要在戒謹。其偏聽自專之弊。不主乎先入之言則小人諂佞迎合之讒。不可得而惑矣。蓋眾人之情不一。至公之論難見。須是察其利病審其可否。然後行之可也（疎山實錄）。

Caotang said: "Being an abbot is nothing else: the essence lies in caution and vigilance. As for the fault of listening partially and acting autocratically, if one does not prioritize preconceived notions, then the flattery, fawning, and pandering slander of petty men will have no way to confuse one. For the sentiments of the multitude are not uniform, and entirely impartial opinions are difficult to find. One must inspect their benefits and harms, examine their propriety, and only then act."
