Wan'an was humane and generous by nature, and practiced thrift and frugality in his conduct. In his everyday talks and instructions, his words were concise and his meanings profound. Widely learned with a powerful memory, he examined and scrutinized truths and principles thoroughly, never resting in indolence nor drifting carelessly. When discussing past and present with others, it was as if he were personally walking among them, and his listeners grasped it clearly as though seeing it with their own eyes. Monks used to say, 'A whole year of study and practice does not match what one gains from a single day of listening to the Master's discourse.' (Records of Things Heard)
