3.74

萬菴謂辯首座曰。圓悟師翁有言。今時禪和子。少節義勿廉恥。士大夫多薄之。爾異時儻不免做遮般蟲豸。常常在繩墨上行。勿趨勢利佞人顏色。生死禍患一切任之。即是不出魔界而入佛界也（法語）。

Wan'an said to Head Monk Bian: 'My teacher-grandfather Yuanwu said: "Chan monks nowadays lack integrity and righteousness, devoid of a sense of shame. Scholar-officials mostly hold them in contempt. If in the future you cannot avoid becoming such creatures, you must constantly walk upon the carpenter's marking-line. Do not pursue power and profit or curry favour with others. Entrust everything to life, death, misfortune, and calamity—this is precisely not exiting the realm of Māra while entering the realm of Buddha."' (Dharma Talk)
