When Head Monk Bian stepped into the world to reside at Qixian on Mount Lu, he constantly carried a single bamboo staff and wore a pair of sandals. Passing by Donglin in Jiujiang, the venerable Hunrong saw him, scolded him, and said, 'A master is a model for others. When your deportment is like this, can you avoid degrading yourself?' The host's courtesies were extremely perfunctory. Bian laughed and said, 'In human life, enjoying oneself in contentment is pleasure; what fault is mine?' Lifting his brush, he wrote a verse and departed. The verse said:
'Do not say Qixian is poor; / The body is poor, but the Way is not poor. / The straw sandals are as fierce as a tiger, / The walking staff as alive as a dragon. / Thirsty, I drink Caoxi water; / Hungry, I swallow chestnut burrs. / Iron-headed and bronze-browed fellows, / All abide in my mountains.'
Hunrong felt ashamed upon reading it. (Yueku Collection)
