4.23

拙菴曰。璇野菴常言。黃龍南禪師寬厚忠信恭而慈愛。量度凝遠博學洽聞。常同雲峯悅遊湖湘避雨樹下。悅箕踞相對。南獨危坐。悅瞋目視之曰。佛祖妙道不是三家村古廟裏土地作死模樣。南稽首謝之。危坐愈甚。故黃太史魯直稱之曰。南公動靜不忘恭敬真叢林主也（幻菴集）。

Zhuo'an said: "Xuan Ye'an often said: 'Chan Master Huanglong Nan was generous, magnanimous, loyal, trustworthy, respectful, kind, and loving; his tolerance was calm and far-reaching, and his learning was broad and well-informed. He once traveled through Hunan together with Yunfeng Yue; sheltering from rain under a tree, Yue sat cross-legged with legs sprawled out opposite him, while Nan alone sat erect. Yue glared at him and said: "The wondrous Way of the buddhas and patriarchs is not the dead appearance of the earth deity in an old shrine of a three-family village!" Nan bowed his head in apology, and sat even more erect.' Therefore, Grand Historian Huang Luzhi praised him, saying: 'Master Nan in movement and stillness never forgot respectfulness; he was truly a master of the monastic grove.'" (Collection of Huan'an)
