Sijing resided at Beiguan in Qiantang. His surname was Yu. He constantly recited the Contemplation Sūtra and chanted the Buddha's name without stopping. He was skilled in painting Buddhas; he would always first contemplate them in a quiet chamber. One day, while painting a sixteen-foot Amitābha Buddha, he first saw the Buddha's light and thereupon awakened to the marvels of brush technique. People therefore called him Yu Amitābha. He built a monastery named Miaoxing, and provided meals to floating-cloud [monks] throughout his life to the number of three million people. Suddenly he sat upright in silence, contemplating the Western Direction in his mind. After seven days, facing the end, he asked for incense to make offerings to the Buddha, sat cross-legged, and passed away. A wondrous fragrance lasted for ten days.
