Ruoyu lived at Xiantan in Zhachuan and studied under Biancai. Returning to Juehai, he built the Amitāyus Pavilion, encouraging both monastics and laity to gather and recite the Buddha's name during all four seasons, which he continued for thirty years. When he was about to depart this world, he dreamt of a spirit-being who told him, "Your fellow student Zhezhang, having attained the Samantabhadra Conduct and Vows Samādhi, has already been born in the Pure Land; he is currently waiting for you." The Master then bathed, changed his clothes, and instructed the assembly to chant the *Sixteen Contemplations Sūtra*. Sitting upright and listening in silence until it was completed, he suddenly said, "The Pure Land appears before me; I must be off!" He hurriedly wrote a gāthā and passed away:
"Originally there was no home to which one could return; / Who could know that along the edge of the clouds there was a road? / The stream's brightness shakes down the moon of the western mountains; / This is precisely when the dream of Xiantan is broken."
He had also written a verse half a month earlier, which read:
"In the void, a net of a thousand flowers; / In the dream, the seven-jeweled lotus pond. / Once the road of returning west is trodden with firm steps, / Not a single speck of doubt remains."
