中立號明智。居南湖常以淨業誘人。其徒介然創十六觀堂。為東州之冠。實師勉之也。一夕謂侍者曰。今聞異香。吾意甚適。即召觀堂行人俱集。含笑言曰。吾往生期至。即面西坐逝。

Zhongli, styled Mingzhi, resided at Nanhu and regularly guided people through pure karma. His disciple Jieran founded the Hall of Sixteen Contemplations, the foremost in the eastern region, which was indeed encouraged by the Master. One evening, he said to his attendant, "Now I smell an extraordinary fragrance, and my mind feels very pleasant." He then summoned all the practitioners of the Contemplation Hall to gather, and with a smile said, "The appointed time for my rebirth has arrived." Thereupon, facing west, he passed away while seated.
