Sizhao received ordination at Jingzhu in Qiantang. He pricked his own blood to copy the *Lotus Sūtra*, making one prostration per character, doing so ten times. He chanted the *Sixteen Contemplations Sūtra* five whole canonic collections of times, the *Amitābha Sūtra* ten canonic collections, and the *Lotus Sūtra* one thousand times. He bowed to the *Avataṃsaka Sūtra*, the *Brahma Net Sūtra*, the seven Pure Land sūtras, and others, amounting to two hundred and seventy fascicles. Every night at the fourth watch, he would rise to recite the Buddha's name; negligent people felt awed and ashamed upon hearing his voice. Moreover, on the twenty-third day of every month, he led monastics and laity in focusing their thoughts on the Three Holy Ones, often gathering a thousand people; this continued throughout the Master's life for thirty years. One night, he told his disciples, "Last night I dreamt of the Buddha's sixteen-foot golden body. Could this not be an omen of rebirth?" He then invited seven monks each day to assist in Buddha-recitation. On the evening of the seventh day, he raised his body, joined his palms, recited the Buddha's name with a loud voice, sat cross-legged, formed a mudrā, and passed away.
