長安張善和。殺牛為業。臨終見牛數十來云。汝殺我。善和告妻。急請僧即為說觀經。若有眾生作不善業應墮惡道善友告令至心具足十念。稱南無阿彌陀佛。除八十億劫生死之罪。即得往生極樂世界。善和大叫云。便入地獄也。即以左手擎火右手捻香。轉身向西厲聲念佛。未足十念即云佛來也。已與我寶座。言訖而終。

Zhang Shanhe of Chang'an made his living by slaughtering oxen. Nearing death, he saw several tens of oxen approach and say: 'You killed us!' Shanhe told his wife: 'Quickly invite a monk!' [The monk] immediately expounded the Contemplation Sūtra for him: 'If there are sentient beings who have done unwholesome deeds and are due to fall into the evil destinies, and a good friend instructs them to invoke with utmost sincerity ten complete recitations of "Namo Amitābha Buddha", this will eliminate the sins of eighty billion kalpas of birth and death, and they will immediately attain rebirth in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.' Shanhe cried out aloud: 'I am about to enter hell!' Immediately, holding fire in his left hand and lighting incense with his right hand, he turned his body to face west and recited the Buddha's name with a loud voice. Before ten recitations were completed, he said: 'The Buddha has come! He has already given me a jeweled throne!' Having finished speaking, he died.
