馬子雲。唐時舉孝廉為涇縣尉押租綱。赴京遇風船溺被繫。乃專心念佛五年。後遇赦因入南陵山寺持一食齋。忽謂人曰。吾一生坎軻。遂精持內教。今西方業成。行當往生安養。明日沐浴新衣。端坐合掌。異香滿戶。喜曰。佛來迎我。言畢而沒。

Ma Ziyun. In the Tang, he was recommended as a Cultivated Talent and Filial Son, and served as the Sheriff of Jing County, escorting tax transport fleets. En route to the capital, his boat sank in a windstorm and he was imprisoned. Thereupon, he dedicated his mind to reciting the Buddha's name for five years. Later, he was pardoned, whereupon he entered a temple in the mountains of Nanling to observe the fast of eating one meal a day. He suddenly said to people: 'My life has been full of hardship, so I have diligently maintained the inner teachings. Now my karma for the Western Land is accomplished, and I shall soon be reborn in Peace and Sustenance.' The next day, having bathed and donned fresh clothing, he sat upright with palms joined. An extraordinary fragrance filled the room. Rejoicing, he said: 'The Buddha has come to welcome me.' Having finished speaking, he passed away.
