Yu Chang. During the reign of the Tang Heavenly Empress, he served as a recording officer in Bingzhou. By day, he decided administrative affairs; by night, he judged in the underworld bureau. Whenever he learned of calamities, he secretly made preparations for them, never speaking of it. This lasted for six years. When he suffered the loss of his mother, he upheld the Diamond Sūtra and no longer served as an underworld clerk. Reaching eighty-four, nearing his end, he suddenly smelled a marvelous fragrance. He immediately said to those around him: 'A holy person is welcoming me to the West.' He then recited the Buddha's name and passed away (from the Records of Retribution).
