The lay practitioner Lu Fahe of Jingzhou under the Liang, after Emperor Yuan was defeated by the Wei, surrendered to the Qi. The Emperor made him Grand Commandant and bestowed upon him a mansion of the highest grade. Fahe requested that it be made into a Buddhist monastery. His seven hundred disciples all cultivated Dhyāna methods. One morning, after paying homage to the Buddha, he sat upon a bed and died. As they were about to enshroud him, his body shrank to merely three chi. When the enshrouding was finished, the Emperor ordered it opened again for inspection, and found only an empty coffin. He had once written on a wall: 'A ten-year Son of Heaven is still acceptable (Emperor Wenxuan reigned for ten years); a hundred-day Son of Heaven is as urgent as fire (the Deposed Emperor reigned for one hundred days); one-year Sons of Heaven sit in rapid succession (Emperor Xiaozhao reigned for less than a year).' People were frightened and painted over it to scrape it away, but in the end they could not erase it.
