39.13

十年（是年隋滅陳始承正統）正月詔曰。光宅顗禪師。昔周武毀教。朕曾發心必許護持。及受命於天遂即興復。師已離世網修己化人。必希獎進僧倫用光大道○勅臣僚士庶。有欲出家聽。是歲度僧至五十萬。

Tenth year (in this year, the Sui extinguished the Chen and first assumed legitimate succession). In the first month, an edict stated: 'Chan Master Yi of Guangzhai: in the past when Emperor Wu of the Zhou destroyed the teaching, We once resolved that We must protect and uphold it. When We received the mandate from Heaven, We immediately revived and restored it. You, Master, have already left behind the worldly net to cultivate yourself and transform others; you must surely encourage and advance the monastic order to glorify the Great Way.' An imperial decree allowed officials, literati, and commoners who wished to leave household life to do so. In this year, ordained monks reached five hundred thousand.
