Twelfth year. The Second Patriarch, Chan Master Huike, had previously transmitted the Dharma to Sengcan in Shuzhou; in this year he went to Zhengjiu Monastery in Guancheng to preach the Dharma. Dharma Master He had earlier been lecturing on the Nirvāṇa Sūtra in that monastery, and his disciples gradually slipped away to listen to Huike's preaching. Unable to bear his indignation, He slandered Huike to the district magistrate, framing him with unlawful crimes. The Master calmly complied and passed away at the age of one hundred and seven. He had earlier said to Can, 'I have past karmic encumbrances; today I must repay them.' In the twelfth month, Chan Master Zhizhe arrived at Mount Yuquan in Jingzhou and sat peacefully in dhyāna for seven days. He moved the spirit power of Lord Guan and his son to lay the foundation and build a monastery, begging to receive the five precepts. The Master entered and resided at Yuquan; those among the monastics and laity who received the precepts and listened to his lectures reached five thousand people. (Guan Yu was a general of the First Sovereign of Shu; details appear in the Basic Annals of Zhizhe.)
