Thirteenth year. The Emperor visited Qizhou and hunted in the Southern Mountains (the character is pronounced sou; winter hunting is called sou). Chasing a beast into an ancient kiln, he suddenly lost track of it and saw only a kiln full of damaged Buddha images. The monk Tanqian said, 'Recently, when Emperor Wu of the Zhou destroyed the Dharma, many sacred images were abandoned in ditches and valleys.' The Emperor thereupon issued an edict that wherever there were broken bodies or abandoned images of the Buddha, the local officials were to inspect and send them to monasteries to be adorned and restored. In the fourth month, Zhizhe expounded the Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sūtra at Yuquan; Dharma Master Zhang'an Guanding was in attendance listening. In the seventh month, the monastery plaque of Yuquan was bestowed upon Zhizhe.
