53.15

漢明帝問摩騰曰。白馬寺東有光怪。民呼聖塚。騰曰。昔阿育王藏舍利八萬四千塔。震旦之境有十九處。此其一也。帝俱往禮拜。詔造塔其上。九層二百尺。

Emperor Ming of the Han asked Mātanga: "East of Baima Monastery there is a strange light, which the people call the Sage's Mound." Mātanga said: "In the past, King Aśoka enshrined relics in eighty-four thousand pagodas; within the realm of Cīnasthāna there are nineteen places, and this is one of them." The Emperor went together with him to pay homage, and decreed that a pagoda be built over it, nine storeys and two hundred feet high.
